UFOs in Campeche filmed by Mexican airforce pilots in 2004
It’s said that there are more sightings of UFOs in Mexico than anywhere else in the world. Well…that gave me an idea…!
If you’ve read INVISIBLE CITY you’ll know one possible reason for this phenomenon. I won’t spoil it if you haven’t read the book.
In fact two real-life UFO sightings in Mexico were the inspiration for events in INVISIBLE CITY. The first was in August 2004 when pilots with the Mexican airforce actually filmed eleven UFOs flying over Campeche! This is the story which inspired the incident which in INVISIBLE CITY is filmed by commercial airline pilots.

“Mexican Air Force pilots filmed 11 unidentified flying objects in the skies over southern Campeche state, a Defense Department spokesman confirmed Tuesday. A videotape made widely available to the news media on Tuesday shows the bright objects, some sharp points of light and others like large headlights, moving rapidly in what appears to be a late-evening sky.”
The second isn’t actually mentioned in the final edit of INVISIBLE CITY, but you can see that what happens in the story has its origins in a real UFO sighting. When Josh and Benicio take a flight near the end of the story, they perform similar manoeuvres as group of UFOs seen in a sighting on Aug 28 2004, near Tapachula, Chiapas.

SIX UFOs REPORTED OVER TAPACHULA “Six “spheres” flew over Pemex facilities; maneuvered above a storage terminal 10:11 – An unidentified flying object (UFO and six large luminous spheres were detected flying over the Pemex (Petroleos Mexicanos–Ed.) facilities in Tapachula, according to the Disaster Prevention Officer Juan Carlos Zuñiga Rodríguez. He said that the craft, having the shape of a circular plate the size of a commercial airliner, performed flight maneuvers over the Petróleos Mexicanos (PEMEX) Storage and Distribution Terminal at an altitude no greater than 1000 meters and abnormal speed and direction changes. Me mentioned that a variety of photographs were taken and that upon developing it was discivered that at least six luminous spheres were flying over the area at the same altitude, although smaller in size than the craft.”
In fact there have been even better UFO sightings near Tapachula.
